Nicole Kidman has snagged the Best Actress award at the Venice Film Festival for her latest role.

In Babygirl, Kidman embodies a high-powered businesswoman who seems a bit too tightly wound. This portrayal has become Kidman’s signature over the last decade, with standout performances in Big Little Lies, The Perfect Couple, Expats, The Undoing, and Being the Ricardos, where she masterfully captures the essence of glamorous anxiety.

However, in Babygirl, directed by Halina Reijn, Kidman offers a captivating and seductive twist on her usual characters. The film, which earned her the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival, presents Kidman as Romy, a CEO struggling to maintain balance in her chaotic personal and professional life, even with the presence of her still-dashing husband, Antonio Banderas.

Enter Harris Dickinson as Samuel, a mysterious and significantly younger intern who quickly exerts a magnetic influence over Romy. Their ensuing psychosexual relationship upends the traditional power dynamics, leading to tensions that threaten Romy’s career and family life.

In one tantalizing exchange, Romy seductively tells Samuel, “You’re very young, I don’t want to hurt you.” To which Samuel replies with a scoff, “Hurt me? I think I have power over you. Because I could make one call and you could lose everything. Does that turn you on when I say that?”

Indeed, it does. By the time Samuel whispers “Good girl” to a camel-coated Romy, it’s clear that emotions are running high.

Although Kidman won the Best Actress award at the Venice Film Festival, she was unable to accept it in person due to the passing of her mother. Reijn read a heartfelt statement on Kidman’s behalf: “Today I arrived in Venice to find out shortly after that my beautiful, brave mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, has just passed. I’m in shock and I have to go to my family, but this award is for her. She shaped me, she guided me, and she made me.”

Kidman expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to honor her mother, stating, “The collision of life and art is heartbreaking, and my heart is broken.”
