After weeks of thrilling performances on The Masked Singer, the latest episode saw the final six competitors battle it out for the coveted Golden Mask Trophy. Among the standout performances was Paparazzo, who wowed the audience with a rendition of TLC’s “Unpretty.” However, it was during the episode’s “Merging of the Masks” that Paparazzo’s identity was finally revealed — and it was none other than 90s teen heartthrob Matthew Lawrence, star of Boy Meets World and Mrs. Doubtfire.

Following his unmasking, Lawrence opened up about his experience on the show, sharing surprising revelations about his time in the competition, his brother Joey’s involvement, and his reaction to a key clue featuring his former co-star Danielle Fishel.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Did you join The Masked Singer to outdo your big brother Joey, who was the Walrus in season 8?

Matthew Lawrence: [Laughs] No way! Honestly, when they first approached me, I was flattered, but I was also scared. I have stage fright, especially when it comes to singing in front of an audience. I had some rough experiences with auditions in the past, and it really affected me. But then, a close friend said, “You’re wearing a mask. This could be your chance to face that fear.” So I took a deep breath, said “yes,” and gave it a shot.

Does your brother Joey know you did the show? What was his reaction?

Yeah, he knows! He was like, “I can’t believe you got to sing more than I did!” [Laughs] It was pretty funny because his season had a different format, and he didn’t get as much time to showcase his talent. But he’s supportive. It’s tough to compete with someone who already has an established fan base, but he handled it well.

In the latest episode, there was a huge clue for your identity — Danielle Fishel made an appearance. Did you know she would be involved?

No idea at all! I was completely surprised. I’ve got to call her now after this interview. You’re not allowed to know anything while filming. Everything is locked down tight, so this was a total shock to me.

Did Danielle know it was you she was supporting?

I honestly don’t know. But now, I have a great reason to reach out and say “hello.” And you know what? She’d be amazing on the show — she should totally do it next time!

Ken guessed that you were another Boy Meets World star, Ben Savage. What did you think of that?

I loved that! Ben’s like a brother to me, so I thought it was a great guess. I was honestly expecting people to guess me sooner, but I enjoyed the anonymity. The clues they give are really clever, but I was just having fun with it all.

What did you take away from your experience on The Masked Singer?

I really enjoyed working with the crew. One particular producer stands out as someone I formed a strong friendship with. Also, during my performance of “Hallelujah” on “Shrek Night,” I had this moment where I just got lost in the music. That moment felt like magic, and I’ll cherish it forever.

Do you think you’ll sing more in the future?

I’m definitely not going to say no anymore! I’ve learned to say yes to new challenges and give it my best shot. Who knows — maybe I’ll keep singing!

It’s clear that Lawrence’s Masked Singer journey was full of memorable moments, and he’s now open to the idea of more performances in the future. “Only the good die young,” he joked, reflecting on the brief but unforgettable experience.
