Seahawks’ DK Metcalf takes defiant stance regarding penalties: ‘I’m not gonna change who I am’

DK Metcalf’s 2023 performance boasts several touchdowns and an impressive 15.3 yards per reception. However, he’s also found himself topping coach Pete Carroll’s list of penalized Seahawks.

In just five games, Metcalf has received five penalties, yet he remains unapologetic. When queried about these infringements, he said, “To me, that’s just a board. I won’t modify my gameplay,” according to Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic. Metcalf elaborated, “If you examine the penalties – taunting, unnecessary roughness, facemask, holding, and another one – by my assessment, I’m performing well. My gameplay is consistent. I won’t alter my identity as a player.”

Interestingly, while one of Metcalf’s penalties in the recent loss to Cincinnati negated a gain by rookie running back Zach Charbonnet, it was soon counterbalanced when Geno Smith made a 32-yard pass to Tyler Lockett on the subsequent play.

But Metcalf’s increasing penalties have become noticeable. His vibrant on-field demeanor has often made it easy for spectators to predict when he’ll be flagged.

Metcalf’s perspective? He likens it to having an off day. “Everyone has bad days at work, right?” he rhetorically asked a reporter. The reporter agreed, prompting Metcalf to conclude, “I’m human. I’m competitive. A penalty board won’t deter me. I’ll stay true to myself.”
