James Van Der Beek Reveals Colorectal Cancer Diagnosis: ‘There’s Reason for Optimism’
The 47-year-old actor shares that he’s receiving unwavering support from his family as he navigates his cancer journey.
James Van Der Beek is staying positive following a recent cancer diagnosis.
The Dawson’s Creek alum, 47, disclosed his health update in an interview with PEOPLE, where he spoke candidly about his private battle with colorectal cancer.
“I have colorectal cancer,” Van Der Beek revealed. “I’ve been quietly managing this diagnosis and taking steps to address it, with incredible support from my family.”
He added, “There’s reason for optimism, and I’m feeling good.”
Representatives for Van Der Beek confirmed the diagnosis to Entertainment Weekly, though no additional details were provided.
Colorectal cancer, according to the American Cancer Society, originates in the colon or rectum, which together form the large intestine. Treatment options typically include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.
While Van Der Beek hasn’t shared further specifics about his diagnosis, he expressed gratitude for the ongoing support of his family, including his wife Kimberly and their six children: Olivia, 14; Joshua, 12; Annabel, 10; Emilia, 8; Gwendolyn, 6; and Jeremiah, 3.
This is Van Der Beek’s first public discussion of his diagnosis. Earlier this year, he announced his involvement in The Real Full Monty, a two-hour Fox special aimed at raising awareness for prostate, testicular, and colorectal cancer screenings and research. The show’s finale will feature a group of male celebrities performing a striptease to break down taboos surrounding men’s health. Alongside Van Der Beek, the cast includes Anthony Anderson (Black-ish), Taye Diggs (All American), Tyler Posey (Teen Wolf), Bruno Tonioli (So You Think You Can Dance), and NFL star Chris Jones.

Beyond the final dance, the men will take on various physical and emotional challenges, sharing personal stories about how cancer has impacted their lives. Van Der Beek may also offer more insights into his own journey as part of the show.
Meanwhile, the actor is preparing for his next role in Sidelined: The QB and Me, a Tubi original film set to release on November 29. In addition to his work, Van Der Beek continues to focus on family, recently celebrating his son Jeremiah’s third birthday with an emotional Instagram post.
“We had no idea how much we needed you. But YOU did,” he wrote. “You are proof to us that kids come into this world with their own essence, appetites, and personality. You’ve never been shy about letting us know who you are and what you want.”
He continued, “Thank you for barging your way into our lives. Thank you for the unique ways you challenge me (a feat after five kids), and thank you for being the best snuggler on the planet. We love you, bubs. Beyond grateful to have those ringlets in my life and to get to be your dad.”
