The Next Jeep Wrangler Will Be an EV

Jeep’s CEO has confirmed that the next Wrangler will be an EV that’s even more capable off-road than it is now.

Jeep enthusiasts and devoted fans, we understand that what we’re about to share may come as a shock. It’s time to prepare yourselves for a significant change. The era of relying on six-cylinder engines to fuel your off-road adventures is drawing to a close. Jeep’s CEO, Christian Meunier, has confirmed to Auto Express in the UK that the next generation Wrangler will be an all-electric vehicle designed for off-roading.

Perhaps this revelation isn’t entirely surprising. Jeep has been exploring electric possibilities for some time, with the Wrangler 4xe serving as an initial experiment. While Jeep has showcased various electric concepts, Meunier firmly believes that the brand’s customers are now prepared to embrace electrification, thanks to the remarkable success of the Wrangler 4xe in terms of sales and performance.

“In the first quarter, 38 percent of all Wranglers sold were 4xe models,” Meunier explained. “And by the end of this year, I anticipate that number will rise to around 50 or 60 percent. It’s not a matter of forcing customers; it’s the result of their experience during test drives. Once they realize they can travel 20 to 25 miles solely on electric power and reduce their visits to the gas station, the appeal becomes evident.”

For those who may have concerns about the off-road capabilities of an electric-powered Wrangler, Meunier is here to reassure you that going electric does not mean sacrificing performance:

By utilizing Jeep’s Trail Rating system, which is applied to all its models, Meunier explained that the next-generation Wrangler will achieve a remarkable rating of 12 on a scale of one to 10. “Currently, the two-door Wrangler Rubicon is at 10, while the five-door Wrangler Rubicon sits at nine. Our starting point on the Trail Rating scale is four with the Renegade. However, I aim to push that limit to 12. We are actively collaborating with our engineering team to achieve this goal,” Meunier shared with Auto Express.

According to Meunier, electrification brings great benefits to Jeep vehicles, enhancing their capabilities. “It provides us with more torque, making the driving experience smoother and more precise,” he explained.

Furthermore, the introduction of electric powertrain opens up possibilities for various architectural configurations. Meunier emphasized that the suspension system and axle choice can be adapted accordingly, allowing for the utilization of either a solid axle or an independent suspension setup. This flexibility offers the opportunity to optimize the vehicle’s performance based on specific off-road requirements.

Jeep enthusiasts, there’s no need to be disheartened by the shift towards electric power in your cherished off-roaders (unlike the initial reaction of some Dodge fans to the announcement of their EVs). Remember the age-old saying, “don’t knock it till you try it.” Embracing this new chapter in Jeep’s evolution may bring exciting advancements and discoveries that could pleasantly surprise you.
