The Addams Family Cast Reunites, Remembers Raul Julia: ‘He Kept Us Entertained’

The iconic Addams Family cast gathered at L.A. Comic Con to reminisce about the beloved ’90s films and to honor the late Raul Julia.

Last weekend, the surviving cast members from The Addams Family and Addams Family Values—both directed by Barry Sonnenfeld—came together to celebrate their time portraying the spooky clan originally created by cartoonist Charles Addams. Christina Ricci (Wednesday Addams), Anjelica Huston (Morticia Addams), Christopher Lloyd (Uncle Fester), Jimmy Workman (Pugsley), and Carel Struycken (Lurch) participated in a panel at the convention, sharing fond memories from their filming experiences.

Raul Julia, who played Gomez Addams and passed away in 1994, was notably absent from the reunion. However, the remaining cast members fondly recalled their time with him on set. Huston emphasized his professionalism and his knack for lifting everyone’s spirits.

“He was the perfect gentleman,” Huston reflected. “He was always the first on set and the last to leave. He was an incredible dancer. I’d often get grumpy during dance rehearsals, feeling they were unnecessary since I considered myself a good dancer. But he would insist on being there and would stay until the end.”

She continued, “He would sing full opera between scenes and takes, always keeping us entertained.”

The Addams Family has seen a resurgence in popularity, particularly with Netflix’s reboot series Wednesday, starring Jenna Ortega in the role previously played by Ricci. This new series has resonated with younger audiences, echoing the family-friendly spirit of the original films. So, what makes these characters so appealing to kids?

“Because we’re doing all the wrong things and getting a lot of attention for it,” Huston explained.

When Entertainment Weekly visited the set of The Addams Family in 1991, Ricci described a particularly challenging week of filming: “I had to chop off Pugsley’s arm, recite Shakespeare, and perform this huge death scene for the school play in the movie. It was really exhausting.” In the sequel, her character Wednesday devises increasingly creative ways to eliminate her new baby brother.

During the panel, Ricci offered further insight into how children perceive the Addams Family’s antics, drawing from her own experience with her son.

“I remember showing my son The Addams Family when he was six, and he kept looking at me, saying, ‘Oh mom, you’re so naughty,'” Ricci shared. “He was thrilled that all these characters were so naughty; he couldn’t believe it.”
