Grading Every NHL Team’s 2023 Offseason So Far
The NHL’s crucial offseason dates are now behind us, and most significant moves have been accomplished. This signals it’s time to assess and grade each of the league’s 32 teams.
Clearly, the true outcomes of these moves will only be revealed once the teams hit the ice, but we can still evaluate the strategies each team employed in assembling their summer rosters.
Criteria for our grading include the value acquired by the teams, whether they addressed their immediate and long-term needs effectively, whether the substantial moves were a good fit, and if the team’s prospects are brighter or dimmer post-offseason.
Let’s delve into an analysis of each team.
The Anaheim Ducks’ primary focus this offseason will revolve around their handling of restricted free agents Trevor Zegras and Troy Terry, specifically the nature of the long-term contracts they agree on.
The Ducks’ roster improvement was somewhat unremarkable. No significant trades were conducted, and the principal outside addition, the signing of Alex Killorn to a long-term contract, could have questionable long-term benefits. Although Killorn is expected to perform well for the Ducks in the coming years, it’s doubtful he will make a significant contribution once the Ducks find their groove. The risk lies in his four-year contract, considering he is already 33 years old.
In the draft, the Ducks made the somewhat unusual decision of selecting Leo Carlsson over Adam Fantilli as their No. 2 overall pick. Although it was an unconventional choice, Carlsson still holds the potential to become a star in the NHL.
In contrast to previous years, the Arizona Coyotes have made several commendable moves this offseason.
Foremost is the addition of veteran players like Sean Durzi, who will bolster the defense line, and Jason Zucker and Alexander Kerfoot, who bring a scoring prowess to the team. Although these additions won’t secure the Coyotes a playoff spot, they will add some experienced NHL talent to the team, which is a positive step compared to the Coyotes’ recent offseasons.
The Boston Bruins, meanwhile, appear to be heading towards a disappointingly lackluster 2023-24 season.

They were destined to take a step back after winning 65 games, but their roster has taken a significant hit. Losing players like Taylor Hall and Nick Foligno due to salary cap issues, coupled with the retirement of Patrice Bergeron, will significantly affect the team. Adding players like Milan Lucic, James van Riemsdyk, and Morgan Geekie, while fine on their own, won’t fill the gap left by their losses. Factoring in likely regression for goalie Linus Ullmark, the Bruins may be a far cry from the record-setting team they were last year.
