Formula 1: Betting on Red Bull has become nonsensical
While it may seem like easy money to bet on Red Bull to win the 2023 Formula 1 World Constructor Championship, it has actually become counterproductive.
After seven races in the 2023 season, Red Bull is the only team that has won a race. Two-time reigning world champion Max Verstappen has secured five victories, while Sergio Perez has won two.
With four 1-2 finishes, Red Bull has established a significant lead of 135 points in the constructor standings over Mercedes.
The team based in Milton Keynes has almost twice as many points as Mercedes overall, with Verstappen alone outscoring the Silver Arrows 170 to 152 in the first seven events.
Although there are still 15 races remaining in the 22-race schedule, it appears highly likely that Red Bull will repeat as constructor champions in 2023.
Considering this, the fact that some sportsbooks are still offering odds on Red Bull winning the title might seem like an easy way to make money.
However, due to Red Bull’s overwhelming favoritism, betting on the Formula 1 World Championship is essentially counterproductive. The RB19’s strength across various circuits makes betting against Red Bull a futile attempt that would result in losing money.
Even betting on Red Bull isn’t the wisest choice. At FanDuel Sportsbook, they are listed as an -8000 favorite to win their third consecutive world championship this season.
If you want to win $100 on their second consecutive title, you would need to set aside $8,000 until it is mathematically secured, which won’t happen for several months. It would be more beneficial to invest that $8,000 in a savings account, considering the current high interest and APY rates. Additionally, there is still technically a chance that Red Bull could be defeated. Therefore, it is safer to take the more prudent route and accumulate more than $100 by the time they secure the title.
Of course, there are still other betting markets available on FanDuel Sportsbook. With 15 races remaining in this year’s schedule, there are still great opportunities for value.
