Drug deal likely sparked Denver mass shooting after Nuggets’ NBA win police say
A shooting occurred in downtown Denver during the celebration of the Nuggets’ first NBA championship win, and police believe it was likely triggered by a drug deal gone wrong. The incident resulted in 10 people being injured, including one of the two individuals arrested in connection with the shooting.
All of the wounded individuals, consisting of nine men and one woman, are expected to recover. Among them, five or six people were bystanders not involved in the drug deal, according to Chief Ron Thomas during a news conference. Approximately 20 shots were fired at the scene, located about a mile away from Ball Arena where the Nuggets had defeated the Miami Heat the previous night.
Although investigators found five handguns at the scene, further testing is required to determine if they were used in the shooting, as stated by the police chief. Additionally, a significant quantity of suspected fentanyl pills and cash were discovered at the location, according to Commander Matt Clark.
Four of the 10 individuals injured were immediately taken to Denver Health Medical Center for emergency surgery. As of Tuesday afternoon, five individuals remained in fair condition at the hospital, according to Dr. Eric Campion, a trauma surgeon.
The shooting took place as thousands of people gathered downtown to celebrate the Nuggets’ victory, but it occurred after midnight as the festivities were winding down. Despite this, there were still hundreds of police officers in the area when the gunfire erupted.
One witness, Scott D’Angelo, captured the celebrations on a livestream and heard a series of loud gunshots that caused chaos as people sought cover or leaped over barricades. Police officers in riot gear reacted swiftly, taking cover and drawing their weapons while urging people to find shelter.
D’Angelo, crouching on the ground, described feeling his arms trembling with nerves and sensed an asthma attack coming on. He heard a woman screaming in pain nearby and saw another injured person just a few feet away. Officers rushed to provide assistance.
An overhead city surveillance video released by the police, without audio, depicted officers converging on the apparent location of the shooting upon hearing the gunshots.

According to D’Angelo, the firing ceased after approximately 20 seconds, as evidenced by his footage, which he has handed over to investigators. As ambulances arrived, he noticed bullet casings only a few feet away from where he had taken cover.
Authorities are still investigating the number of individuals involved in the shooting. Two men are currently being held on suspicion of being felons prohibited from possessing firearms, as confirmed by Commander Clark. At present, no lawyers have been listed as representing them in court records.
One of the suspects fled the scene despite being wounded and was apprehended several blocks away with a handgun and fentanyl. The other suspect was arrested in a car in a nearby parking lot, where a firearm was found concealed in the floorboards. No occupants of the car sustained injuries.
The shooting occurred in Denver’s LoDo district, renowned for its restaurants and nightlife. Police tape cordoned off the area overnight, while investigators combed through the scene using flashlights. The site was marked with evidence markers and contained remnants from the celebrations, including an e-scooter and a green rental bike.
D’Angelo expressed feeling a sense of numbness after witnessing a mass shooting firsthand and described the difficulty in comprehending the deliberate targeting of innocent bystanders.
The incident took place in the same vicinity where fans had previously celebrated the Colorado Avalanche winning the Stanley Cup without any major issues. Chief Thomas noted that similar preparations had been made for a possible championship celebration for the Nuggets. However, he emphasized that a drug deal in the midst of the festivities was an unforeseen circumstance.
