Denver Nuggets win first NBA championship title in Game 5 victory over Miami Heat
The Denver Nuggets secured their first NBA championship by defeating the Miami Heat 94-89 in Game 5 of the NBA Finals, held at Ball Arena in Denver on Monday night.
Nikola Jokić, a two-time MVP, led the Nuggets with an impressive performance of 28 points and 16 rebounds. Despite struggling with their shooting, the team managed to excel defensively and ultimately emerged victorious.
Jokić, the Serbian center, was honored as the Most Valuable Player of the NBA Finals. He became the first center since Shaquille O’Neal in 2002 to receive the prestigious award named after the late Bill Russell.
Following the Game 5 triumph, Nuggets coach Michael Malone praised Jokić, recognizing not only his basketball skills but also his character and contributions as a person. Malone expressed gratitude for having Jokić as part of the team, emphasizing his status as the best player in the NBA.
Throughout the playoffs, the 28-year-old Jokić achieved a remarkable feat of recording 10 triple-doubles, surpassing Wilt Chamberlain’s previous record of seven in a single postseason. He also became the first player in NBA history to lead in points, rebounds, and assists during a single postseason, as confirmed by ESPN Stats & Info.
Michael Porter Jr. contributed 16 points and 13 rebounds, while Jamal Murray added 14 points to support the Nuggets’ victory.

Despite struggling with their shooting, particularly from the free-throw and 3-point lines, the Nuggets managed to build a lead of up to seven points in the fourth quarter. However, the Heat fought back with a 13-5 run, taking a one-point lead of 89-88 with 1:58 remaining in the game.
In the final moments, the Nuggets rallied and scored the game’s last six points. Bruce Brown’s putback layup, followed by crucial free throws from Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Brown, sealed the victory. The Heat attempted multiple 3-pointers but failed to connect.
Heat coach Erik Spoelstra acknowledged Denver’s superiority, stating that the Nuggets were the better team in the series. He highlighted the team’s strong defensive effort in the game, despite falling short of their ultimate goal.
Despite their shooting struggles, including a 5-for-28 performance from beyond the arc, and 13-for-23 at the free-throw line, the Nuggets emerged triumphant.
The Nuggets, formerly a team in the American Basketball Association, joined the NBA before the 1976-1977 season after playing in the ABA for nine seasons. This championship victory marks a significant milestone in the franchise’s history, which had previously reached the conference finals on four occasions but fell short of the ultimate success.
To celebrate the Nuggets’ achievement, the city of Denver will hold a parade and celebration on Thursday. The team’s victory over the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference Finals propelled them to this historic NBA championship.
