The reigning Super Bowl champions are embarking on a foreign excursion this week, but they will encounter a very familiar face on the opposing side.

When the Kansas City Chiefs clash with the Miami Dolphins on Sunday in Germany, it marks the first time they’ll face off against the former Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill since he was traded.

Chiefs chairman and CEO Clark Hunt believes that the trade has ultimately been mutually advantageous for both teams.

“I think that was a trade that worked out well for both parties,” Hunt commented on Tuesday, according to a team transcript. “Obviously, Tyreek is an incredible player and has done very well in his time with the Dolphins.”

Hill has seamlessly integrated into Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel’s offensive scheme, much like he did with Chiefs head coach Andy Reid’s system. After earning All-Pro honors in his first season with the Dolphins, setting franchise records with 119 receptions and 1,710 receiving yards in 2022, Hill has already eclipsed 1,000 receiving yards this year. He’s on pace to potentially break the league’s single-season record. As the Dolphins lead the AFC East with a 6-2 record and aim for a second consecutive playoff appearance, Hill has been a crucial part of their success.

Conversely, the Chiefs have also reaped the rewards from the package of five draft picks they received from the Dolphins in exchange for Hill. By using three of the selections acquired in the trade, the Chiefs moved up to acquire cornerback Trent McDuffie and selected wide receiver Skyy Moore in the second round.

McDuffie has become a vital component in the starting lineup and an integral part of the 2023 Chiefs defense, which has performed admirably thus far. Moore’s performance has not been exceptional, but he did contribute a pivotal punt return in last season’s AFC Championship Game and scored a touchdown in the team’s Super Bowl victory.

Through strategic repackaging of the draft picks, the Chiefs have selected McDuffie, Moore, offensive lineman Darian Kinnard, wide receiver Rashee Rice, defensive tackle Keondre Coburn, and secured a fifth-round pick in 2025.

Equally significant, the Chiefs were able to part ways with Hill’s contract demands, culminating in his signing of a massive four-year, $120 million deal.

While the Chiefs haven’t been able to replace Hill’s production with a single receiver, they secured victory in Super Bowl LVII and currently lead the AFC West this season.

“I think this year we are seeing that it did indeed work out well,” Hunt noted.

The ultimate outcome of this trade showdown will be revealed on Sunday in Frankfurt.
