In the lead-up to Argentina’s decisive run-off election, the right-wing duo Javier Milei and Victoria Villarruel are facing unexpected backlash: a united front formed by Taylor Swift and K-pop enthusiasts.

Milei, a staunch libertarian advocating for integrating the US dollar into Argentina’s economy and contemplating the legalisation of organ trade, made a strong showing in the initial polls. However, he was subsequently overtaken by the more moderate finance minister, Sergio Massa.

Both Massa and Milei are now hustling to secure votes for the second electoral round set for November 19th.

A Twitter group named “Swifties against Freedom Advances” criticized Milei’s party for their controversial stances, using Swift’s words, claiming, “we have to be on the right side of history.”

Taylor Swift’s immense popularity in Argentina, evidenced by her selling out three concerts at Buenos Aires’ massive River Plate stadium, could influence public opinion. Prominent TV personality Jorge Rial remarked that underestimating Swift fans could be detrimental for Milei, stating, “Step down, you can’t beat this.”

On another front, Milei’s running mate, Villarruel, has provoked the ire of global K-pop sensation BTS’s fans due to her past tweets. One particularly offensive tweet from 2020 likened the band’s name to a “sexually transmitted disease,” sparking outrage among the group’s enormous fan base.

BTS, hailing from South Korea, has achieved global acclaim, drawing parallels with the iconic Beatles for their record-breaking success.

Villarruel downplayed the backlash, referring to her past tweets as ancient “Twitter banter.” But, Juan Grabois, a political figure who previously vied against Massa, chimed in with a warning underscoring the power of K-pop’s influence, stating bluntly, “You don’t mess with K-pop.”
