Angelina Jolie Transforms in Eerie, Whimsical Trailer for Oscar-Buzzed Maria Callas Biopic
Angelina Jolie’s striking transformation into legendary opera singer Maria Callas is the focal point of the first full-length trailer for Maria, directed by Pablo Larraín, known for his biopics Jackie and Spencer. The trailer unveils a haunting, dreamlike atmosphere that perfectly complements the emotional depth of Callas’ story.
The trailer opens with an evocative question, “Maria, what do you want to sing?” as an empty theater echoes with silence. Jolie, as Callas, approaches a piano onstage, but before she can answer, the scene shifts to a series of memories. The visuals flash between dramatic moments from Callas’ life, showcasing eccentric costumes, powerful performances, and black-and-white memories filled with emotional highs and lows, punctuated by tears and passion.
As the chaos of Callas’ turbulent career fades, the scene returns to Jolie standing alone in the deserted theater. “Not today,” she softly replies, her footsteps the only sound as she walks offstage, leaving the audience with a sense of melancholy and reflection.
Directed by Larraín, Maria delves into the final days of Callas’ life, as the American-Greek soprano reflects on her storied career during her time in Paris, before her death in 1977. Known for his deep exploration of complex female figures, Larraín brings the same sensitivity to Maria that he did with previous works on Jackie Kennedy and Princess Diana, both of which earned their stars, Natalie Portman and Kristen Stewart, Oscar nominations.
Jolie’s performance as Callas is already generating considerable Oscar buzz. If nominated, it would mark her first Academy Award recognition since her Best Actress nod for Changeling in 2008. Jolie previously won an Oscar for Girl, Interrupted and was honored with the Academy’s Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 2014.
