Alex Marquez admits: Marc Marquez told me ‘If I don’t enjoy it I will retire’
Marc Marquez hinted at retirement to his brother Alex if he doesn’t find joy in his debut year with Gresini Ducati.
In 2024, the Marquez brothers will be teammates at the Ducati satellite team, following Marc’s decision to leave Honda.
Marc’s future in the sport became even more uncertain after Alex disclosed details from their private chat.
When queried about Marc’s commitment beyond his initial one-year contract, Alex told TNT Sports, “The one-year timeframe is to gauge his passion for the sport. He plainly told me, ‘If it’s not fun for me anymore, I’ll hang up my boots’. It’s a real possibility. He wants to test the waters, to see if he can regain his speed after his injury. I’m confident about it, but he harbors some skepticism. Having ridden the Honda bike last year, I understand his reservations. But I believe when he’s at Valencia, he’ll rediscover his passion, and any doubts will vanish.”

Discussing his own switch from LCR Honda to Gresini Ducati the previous year, Alex denied having a hand in Marc’s decision. He remarked, “He was constantly oscillating in his choices. Once, I told him that I’d give advice as a sibling, not as a Gresini Ducati member. He needed a fresh start to reignite his passion. Seeing him on the Motegi podium, I noticed he lacked his usual enthusiasm. The smaller team environment at Ducati, though just as professional, is more familial, which might help Marc reconnect with his love for racing.”
On the topic of what Marc can anticipate from a year-old Ducati, Alex said, “He can certainly look forward to a robust engine. It’s a bike that offers immense feedback. After riding the same model for 11 years, he’ll undergo many adjustments. I had to adapt after three years on the Honda, so imagine his transition after 11 years. But he’s quick to adapt and will undoubtedly be fast on the track.”
Alex firmly believes that with the right equipment, Marc can reassert his claim as MotoGP’s premier racer, stating, “For a while, he couldn’t showcase his prowess due to challenging circumstances. But the upcoming year offers him another chance to prove himself.”
