AFL suspends Joel Smith after Melbourne player tests positive for cocaine

Melbourne AFL player Joel Smith faces a provisional suspension following a positive anti-doping test taken after a game earlier this year.

The AFL announced the immediate suspension on Thursday after Sport Integrity Australia (SIA) informed them of a potential breach of the Australian football anti-doping code due to an adverse test result.

The test, conducted after Melbourne’s victory against Hawthorn in round 23 on 20 August, detected the presence of cocaine and its metabolite benzoylecgonine in Smith’s sample. Despite this, Smith played in the Demons’ final season match against Sydney and two finals matches against Collingwood and Carlton.

Smith’s participation in Melbourne’s football activities has been halted while investigations by SIA and the AFL are ongoing.

The Melbourne Football Club acknowledged the adverse finding but refrained from further comments due to the ongoing investigation, stating they would provide updates when permitted.

The AFL Players’ Association confirmed that Smith was notified by SIA of the presence of a prohibited substance. The association urged against speculations and affirmed their support for Smith and Melbourne.

Joel Smith, 27, who followed in the footsteps of his father, Shaun, in playing for the Demons, has been with the club since 2015. However, injuries have restricted his participation, allowing him only 26 games in his initial six years with the team.
