Whoopi Goldberg Clarifies Lighthearted Joke About Donald Trump on The View
Whoopi Goldberg addressed concerns regarding a joke she made about President-elect Donald Trump during Thursday’s episode of The View.
The discussion began with the cohosts commenting on Trump’s rejection of a bipartisan plan to avert a government shutdown. As the conversation turned to Vice President-elect J.D. Vance and Elon Musk — now leading the newly-formed Department of Government Efficiency — Joy Behar quipped about Vance plotting a takeover of the presidency. Goldberg added her own joke, saying, “Stay away from the stairways. ‘Cause people put their leg out to trip you going down the stairs. Watch out!”
After the show returned from a commercial break, Goldberg addressed the joke to clarify its intent. “I need to clear something up,” she said. “My cat lays in wait for me on my stairs all the time, and that’s what I was referring to. I wasn’t trying to indicate anyone was literally trying to trip him.”
Sunny Hostin chimed in to reiterate the lighthearted nature of Goldberg’s comment, adding, “You did not mean that anybody should hurt the president. Of course not.”
Goldberg agreed, stating, “It was lighthearted, and it’s the holidays. My goodness.” She further explained, “For all of you who are saying, ‘Oh my God, listen to what she said!’ I got a cat who does this to me every day. That’s what sparked it.”
Reflecting on the Election Results
The episode also included reactions to Trump’s recent reelection victory against Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz. The cohosts, wearing black to mark the occasion, shared their views on the election’s outcome.
“My takeaway is that the system works. We live in a democracy, and people spoke,” Joy Behar said. “I vehemently disagree with the decision Americans made, but I feel hopeful we have a democratic system we should value and love.”
Sunny Hostin expressed deep concerns, saying, “I worry about the working class, I worry about my mother, a retired teacher. I worry about our elderly, their Social Security, and Medicare. I worry about my children’s future and my daughter, who now has fewer rights than I had.”
Alyssa Farah Griffin emphasized the need for unity, calling for an end to divisive rhetoric. “There’s truly more that unites us than divides us. I know it doesn’t feel like that for many people in this moment, but we need to bring down the temperature.”
Goldberg closed the segment with an optimistic note. “We’re still here,” she said. “When I got out of the car today, I saw mailmen, people with their kids, people walking around drinking Starbucks. I saw people living their lives, and that’s what we have to do.”
The View airs weekdays at 11 a.m. ET/10 a.m. PT on ABC.
