Woman Dies on Opening Day of Burning Man 2024, Under Investigation
Burning Man 2024 has started on a tragic note.
Just hours before the festival officially began on August 25 in Nevada, a female attendee was found deceased. According to a Monday news release from Burning Man organizers, emergency services were called to an unresponsive individual on Sunday at around 11:29 a.m. Despite immediate life-saving efforts, the woman could not be revived.
The deceased has been identified as 39-year-old Kendra Frazer. The Pershing County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that an investigation into the cause and circumstances of her death is underway.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Kendra’s family and friends,” Sheriff Jerry Allen stated.
In response to the incident, Burning Man organizers have provided additional support for attendees in Black Rock City. This includes peer support services at Black Rock Rangers headquarters and outposts, as well as crisis support from the Emergency Services Department.

Last year, Leon Reece, 32, from Truckee, Calif., was found unresponsive on the festival grounds. His death was later attributed to an accidental overdose of cocaine, ethanol, and MDMA, according to the medical examiner’s office.
The 2023 event also faced challenges from severe weather, which led to the festival shutting down three days early due to muddy conditions affecting tens of thousands of attendees.
This year’s Burning Man festival is scheduled to continue through September 2.
