Why We’ll See Less of Jimmy Fallon and The Tonight Show
The Tonight Show is trimming its production schedule to align with other late-night programs.
Starting soon, Jimmy Fallon’s The Tonight Show will no longer air new episodes on Fridays. Instead, the show will be produced four days a week—Monday through Thursday—and will feature a repeat episode each Friday. This change reflects a broader trend among late-night talk shows, including The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Daily Show, and Late Night with Seth Meyers, all of which also produce new episodes only four days a week.
NBC has confirmed that Fallon’s show will continue to produce new content from Monday through Thursday, maintaining its summer schedule. The shift to a four-day production week will bring it in line with the majority of late-night shows, which have long adhered to this schedule.
In June, NBC extended its contract with Fallon, securing his role and the show’s spot on the network through 2028. Fallon, who took over as host in 2014 after Jay Leno’s second departure, is the sixth person to host The Tonight Show since its debut in 1954. Previous hosts include Steve Allen, Jack Paar, Johnny Carson, Leno, and Conan O’Brien. Fallon, who previously hosted Late Night from 2009 to 2014, has become a familiar face in late-night television.
Mark Lazarus of NBC Universal praised Fallon, saying, “For nearly 30 years, Jimmy Fallon has brought laughter into the homes of millions and charmed audiences from the stages of 30 Rock. It’s been a privilege to witness Jimmy at the helm of The Tonight Show, and we’re excited to see what innovations he and the incredible staff will bring in the years ahead.”
Fallon humorously responded to the change, “For nearly 30 years, I’ve brought laughter into the homes of millions and charmed audiences from the stages of 30 Rock. It’s been a privilege to be at the helm of The Tonight Show, and I’m thrilled to see what innovations my incredible staff and I will deliver in the future. No, I’m not changing my quote. Tell Mark to change his.”
Why We’ll See Less of Jimmy Fallon and The Tonight Show
In 2024, The Tonight Show has featured a star-studded lineup, including Will Smith, Dwayne Johnson, Ariana Grande, Hillary Clinton, and many others. The list of celebrities who have appeared is notably extensive, underscoring the show’s continued appeal.
The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon airs new episodes Monday through Thursday at 11:35 p.m. on NBC.
