What to know before 2023 MLB trade deadline

Let’s take a look at the approaching Major League Baseball trade deadline, along with the noteworthy players who have been traded.

As the clock ticks down, MLB teams have to decide whether they’re going to buy or sell.

The annual trade deadline gives title contenders one final shot to enhance their rosters for the final stages of the season, while sellers can exploit this opportunity to garner future benefits by trading their desirable players.

So, with this year’s deadline looming, who could be sporting new colors as the regular season draws to a close?

Here’s what you need to know ahead of the 2023 MLB trade deadline.

When is the 2023 MLB trade deadline? The deadline for MLB trades this year is at 6 p.m. ET/3 p.m. PT on Tuesday, Aug. 1.

Can transactions occur after the MLB trade deadline? Since 2019, there’s only been a single MLB trade deadline. Although players can still switch teams through waivers, no trades can happen after the deadline.

Prior to 2019, the July 31/Aug. 1 trade deadline was known as the non-waiver trade deadline, and players could be placed on trade waivers after the initial deadline.

Will Shohei Ohtani be traded? The Los Angeles Angels have opted not to trade their star player, instead attempting to strengthen their team at the trade deadline.

Shohei Ohtani has been taken off the market by the Angels, who have since brought in starting pitcher Lucas Giolito from the Chicago White Sox, along with outfielder Randal Grichuk and first baseman C.J. Cron from the Colorado Rockies.

To acquire these instant-impact players, the team had to part with several of its top prospects. Still four games short of an AL wild card spot, the Angels have their work cut out if they want to take Ohtani to his inaugural MLB postseason before his free agency.

Top MLB players traded so far The Angels are not the only ones making big moves.

Here’s a look at some of the other notable players on the move:

Max Scherzer

The Texas Rangers have acquired Max Scherzer, one of the highest-paid players in baseball, from the New York Mets, with Scherzer waiving his trade clause to make it happen.

David Robertson

Before trading Scherzer, the Mets made an intra-divisional trade, sending reliever David Robertson to the Miami Marlins.

Despite the trades of Scherzer and Robertson, the Mets’ general manager denies that the team is having a “fire sale.” With a 50-55 record and 6.5 games behind the final NL wild card spot, the team has quite the mountain to climb.

Jordan Hicks

The Toronto Blue Jays bolstered their bullpen by bringing in Jordan Hicks from the St. Louis Cardinals.

Jordan Montgomery and Chris Stratton were also traded by the Cardinals to the Rangers.

Lance Lynn

The Los Angeles Dodgers have increased their pitching depth by acquiring Lance Lynn and Joe Kelly from the White Sox.

Earlier in the week, the Dodgers also added shortstop Amed Rosario from the Cleveland Guardians.

Carlos Santana

Carlos Santana, like Robertson, was traded within the division ahead of the deadline. The veteran first baseman moved from the Pittsburgh Pirates to the Milwaukee Brewers.
