The Menendez brothers are experiencing a resurgence in pop culture, but whether that’s good or bad remains debatable. What’s clear, though, is that they’ve become a hot topic. With Ryan Murphy’s Monsters series and a Netflix documentary shedding new light on the infamous siblings, the Menendez brothers have been recast in a controversial yet undeniably “sexy” narrative. A sketch cut for time from this week’s Saturday Night Live tackled this strange new Menendez fascination.

In the sketch, which was part of the Weekend Update segment, cast members Michael Longfellow and Marcello Hernandez play “Two Guys Dressed as Doctors for Halloween.” However, instead of being recognized as medical professionals, they’re repeatedly mistaken for Erik and Lyle Menendez, the brothers convicted of killing their parents in 1996.

Longfellow explains their confusion: “We thought people would see two doctors and start banging pots and pans together for us, like during the pandemic.” But instead, Hernandez adds, “People keep yelling things like, ‘You’re innocent!’ and ‘You’re so hot!’”

Longfellow then delivers the punchline: “And also, ‘Kiss each other again!’” to which Weekend Update co-host Colin Jost responds, “Again?” Longfellow clarifies that it’s something that happens in the limited series. And indeed, the show explores this unsettling angle.

Despite the humor, the Menendez story remains a sensitive subject. Erik Menendez has publicly criticized Ryan Murphy’s portrayal of him and his brother, particularly the depiction of alleged sexual abuse. Erik wrote in a statement, “I believe Ryan Murphy cannot be this naive and inaccurate about the facts of our lives so as to do this without bad intent…. Murphy shapes his horrible narrative through vile and appalling character portrayals of Lyle and of me and disheartening slander.”

Yet, the renewed attention on the Menendez case has fueled public interest, with new evidence surfacing and calls for the brothers’ release intensifying. Reality star and prison-reform advocate Kim Kardashian has even lent her voice to the cause. Murphy’s show and platforms like TikTok have helped reframe the Menendez brothers as unlikely “sex symbols,” with fans embracing their ‘80s style. The buzz was also boosted by actor Cooper Koch’s revealing scene in Monsters, which included full frontal nudity without a prosthetic, as he shared on Watch What Happens Live.

Back in the SNL sketch, Longfellow and Hernandez note that since people are more into the Menendez brothers than they are into doctors, they’ve decided to just roll with it—despite Longfellow not being Hispanic and the two jokingly speculating about possible Nazi ancestry. But that’s another story.
