The Umbrella Academy Cast Recaps the Series Before Final Season: “Somehow, All This Leads to a Meme”
Elliot Page, Aidan Gallagher, Ritu Arya, and more stars catch you up on the past three seasons of the Netflix superhero show.
The first three seasons of “The Umbrella Academy” have been a wild and twisty ride. As the Netflix superhero series gears up for its fourth and final season premiere this week, the cast joined Entertainment Weekly to recap the long, strange journey it’s been.
Much like the original comic series “The Umbrella Academy” by writer Gerard Way and artist Gabriel Bá, season 1 of the show began with a flashback to Sir Reginald Hargreeves (described by Elliot Page as “Elon Musk meets Howard Hughes”) adopting seven children with superpowers, each born to different mothers on the same day. Flash forward to the present, where the siblings — including the time-displaced Number Five (Aidan Gallagher) but not the then-deceased Ben (Justin H. Min) — reunite for their adoptive father’s funeral.
Victor Hargreeves (Page) has long felt estranged from the rest of the family, believing he was powerless. However, when his lover Leonard Peabody (John Magaro) helps him realize his ability to create extremely strong sound waves, Victor lashes out, causing an apocalypse. But that was far from the only complicated relationship in season 1.
“You are not to judge!” Ritu Arya (who plays the power-mimicking Lila) tells Emmy Raver-Lampman (who plays the mind-controlling Allison Hargreeves) in EW’s video. “I’m sorry, who was falling in love with her brother?”
“Oh yeah, fair enough,” Raver-Lampman replies, referencing Allison’s romantic feelings for Luther Hargreeves (Tom Hopper).
The Hargreeves siblings failed to stop the apocalypse in the season 1 finale but were given a second chance by being catapulted back in time to the ’60s. There, they meet a younger version of Hargreeves and get involved in the civil rights movement, among other things. However, a small moment of Victor and Five passing each other in cars became the most popular part of season 2.
“Somehow, all of this leads to a meme,” Gallagher says.
Raver-Lampman admitted she’s never seen the car meme, prompting Arya to reenact Gallagher’s and Page’s facial expressions from the scene.
