Stanton targeting Terriers triumph in Premier League Cup opener

Ahead of Newcastle United Under-21s’ 2023/24 Premier League Cup kick-off, Ellis Stanton sets his eyes on clinching a victory in their Group F opener against Huddersfield Town on Wednesday.

The promising Magpies, who made it to the competition’s finals in 2019, will lock horns with Huddersfield’s Terriers at the John Smith’s Stadium. This marks the beginning of a series of challenging matches for Newcastle’s budding talents, with five games lined up this month. Additionally, the under-19 team is gearing up for their UEFA Youth League opener against AC Milan.

Stanton, having begun his professional journey with United in 2022, expressed his anticipation to nufc.co.uk: “Our initial Cup game offers a foundation to excel in the league. A strong start on Wednesday could propel our confidence for subsequent matches. Reflecting on our previous performance against Wrexham, despite the 1-0 setback, I believe we showcased our potential. The energy on the field was palpable, and we were unfortunate with the outcome.”

Having been associated with the Magpies’ youth division since he was eight, Stanton made notable contributions at the under-18 level, including two goals in the first three league matches last season. However, a severe meniscus injury benched him for a significant part of the 2022/23 season.

Reflecting on his injury, the 18-year-old shared the emotional and physical toll of the prolonged recovery: “The duration I spent off the field was challenging. Seeing my teammates play intensified my yearning to return. However, this hiatus spurred my motivation. I’ve emerged mentally resilient, realizing if I could overcome this hurdle, future challenges would be surmountable.”

Now fully recovered, the Farringdon-native aims to maximize his game time, considering the matches he missed last season. “My goal is to maintain my training intensity, ensure fitness, and seize every opportunity that comes my way,” he stated.
