In a groundbreaking moment on America’s Got Talent Season 19, judge Sofía Vergara made history during the first live quarterfinals show by awarding a Golden Buzzer that sent an act directly to the finals.

The four-member group, Hakuna Matata Acrobats, left the audience in awe as they performed a series of gravity-defying stunts, balancing on each other in ways that seemed impossible. (You can watch their performance in the video below.)

“This is definitely one of the most ambitious acts I’ve seen on AGT,” Vergara remarked. “I can see the improvement from your audition. You guys absolutely deserve to be here.”

Although she initially believed they wouldn’t need any extra help, Vergara decided to guarantee their spot in the finals by using her Live Show Golden Buzzer. This season introduced a new rule allowing each judge one Golden Buzzer during the live shows, making Vergara’s decision the first of its kind.

Vergara wasn’t the only judge to be impressed by the acrobats’ performance. Simon Cowell praised them, saying, “This was one of the most difficult, dangerous acts we’ve seen on a live show. It genuinely felt like you’ve arrived.”

Heidi Klum echoed the sentiment, calling the performers “incredible” and saying they had her attention “to the very end.”

However, Howie Mandel offered a more nuanced take. While he agreed with Cowell that the group had “arrived,” he humorously pointed out that three of the acrobats were constantly supported by the fourth, who served as their “carry-on.” Still, Mandel acknowledged the extreme difficulty of their act, even if it might not have been fully appreciated by the audience.

The episode also featured the return of Arshiya, the teenage contortionist who had shocked viewers in the season premiere. Her latest act was even more unsettling, leaving the audience both captivated and creeped out.

Out of all the performances, only three acts will advance based on viewer votes, which can be cast via the AGT app or website. The results will be announced during a live episode on Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. CT on NBC.

Each Tuesday through September 3, a new group of contestants who made it through the auditions will compete in the Live Quarterfinals. Those who win the audience vote will move on to the Live Semifinals, where 12 acts will battle for one of six spots in the finale. The final round, featuring the six semifinal winners and the four Live Show Golden Buzzer recipients, will take place on Tuesday, September 17, with the winner revealed in the show’s finale on Tuesday, September 24.
