As the show enters its landmark 50th season, some changes have occurred within the cast. Punkie Johnson announced her departure after four seasons, sharing that she felt she didn’t quite fit the sketch comedy mold. “I never grew up in sketch, I never went to a sketch school,” Johnson explained. “That show is for a different type of person.”

Additionally, two featured players will not be returning: Molly Kearney, the show’s first nonbinary cast member, who announced her exit on Instagram, and Chloe Troast, who revealed she was “not asked back” after joining last season.

Typically, featured players either get promoted to repertory status or are let go after two years. Fortunately, Kearney and Troast’s fellow featured players Marcello Hernandez, Michael Longfellow, and Devon Walker have all been promoted to the main cast for season 50.

New faces joining the cast include featured players Ashley Padilla, Emil Wakim, and Jane Wickline.

Returning cast members are expected to include Mikey Day, Andrew Dismukes, Chloe Fineman, Heidi Gardner, James Austin Johnson, Ego Nwodim, Sarah Sherman, Kenan Thompson, and Bowen Yang, along with longtime “Weekend Update” anchors Michael Che and Colin Jost. Fans are also eagerly anticipating the return of Maya Rudolph, who is expected to reprise her Emmy-winning impression of Kamala Harris during the Vice President’s presidential campaign.

Coinciding with this milestone season, Jason Reitman’s biographical film about SNL, Saturday Night, will premiere in Los Angeles, New York City, and Toronto on September 27, followed by a limited release on October 4 and a wider release on October 11.

Saturday Night Live Season 50 premieres Saturday, September 28, at 11:30 p.m. ET/8:30 p.m. PT on NBC and Peacock.
