Play on the midway: South Plains Fair under way with fun and food and more
The Panhandle-South Plains Fair of 2023 began with its customary preview night on Thursday, setting the stage for nine fun-filled days in Lubbock.
Taking place daily until September 30 at Broadway and Avenue A fairgrounds, this year’s fair promises fresh enhancements and cherished features, including a clear-bag policy, beer offerings, and notable upgrades in parking and cooling amenities.
Highlighting the attractions at the Lubbock fair: Jennifer Wallace, the general manager for the fair, shared with the Avalanche-Journal some exciting additions. Fair attendees can anticipate a wide array of stalls managed by non-profit food vendors, ranging from the renowned Science Spectrum and local churches to band boosters and community service groups.
A noticeable upgrade awaits attendees even before they enter the fair: an improved parking facility. Thanks to a contractor from the 19th Street redevelopment project, the formerly bare dirt parking area now boasts nearly 100 loads of superior parking surface material. Wallace expressed optimism that, especially with recent rains and potential future downpours, this enhancement would ensure a smoother parking experience.
“We’re hopeful that even if it does rain, our new surface will prevent the creation of massive muddy patches in the parking lot,” she noted.
Inside, the livestock pavilion seating area now benefits from several evaporative cooling units, and eight new permanent shade covers have been installed over the Midway picnic zones.
Wallace emphasized the fair’s commitment to improving the experience: “Every year, we gather feedback and work diligently on areas of concern like parking and cooling. Our annual earnings are fully reinvested into the facility to make such enhancements.”
The Reithoffer midway show is making a comeback with its assortment of attractions, ranging from the classic Ferris wheel and carousel to adrenaline-pumping rides and children’s amusements. A brand-new attraction, the New York, New York fun house, is also slated to debut, added Wallace.
Admission is set at $10 for adults (13 and up) and $5 for children between 2 and 12 years. Infants under 1 enter for free. Meanwhile, parking at the proximate spacious lot is priced at $5 per vehicle.
