Pixar Announces Coco 2 with Original Directors Returning
Get ready to return to the Land of the Dead — Coco 2 is officially in development at Pixar, with directors Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina back at the helm.
The exciting news came during a recent Disney shareholders’ meeting, where CEO Bob Iger confirmed the sequel is in early development. “It will be full of humor, heart, and adventure,” he promised, adding, “We can’t wait to share more soon.”
The follow-up to the 2017 Oscar-winning hit is currently slated for a theatrical release in 2029. Mark Nielsen — the producer behind Toy Story 4 and the upcoming Inside Out 2 — is set to produce the project.
The original Coco followed Miguel, a 12-year-old aspiring musician (voiced by Anthony Gonzalez) who defies his family’s long-standing ban on music and finds himself on a journey through the vibrant Land of the Dead. With a voice cast that included Gael García Bernal, Benjamin Bratt, Alanna Ubach, and Gabriel Iglesias, the film struck a powerful chord with audiences around the world.

Coco was both a critical and commercial success, earning nearly $815 million globally and winning two Academy Awards — Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for the emotional ballad “Remember Me,” written by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez.
In addition to the film sequel, Disney is expanding the Coco universe into its theme parks. At last year’s D23 Expo, it was announced that Disney California Adventure Park will debut the first Coco-inspired attraction. Construction is expected to begin in 2026.
With the beloved filmmakers back and a new adventure on the horizon, fans have plenty to look forward to — and maybe even a few new songs to sing along to.
