Creator Alexi Hawley Reflects on the Show’s Unexpected End

Netflix has officially pulled the plug on The Recruit after two seasons, marking the end of Noah Centineo’s action-packed spy thriller.

Entertainment Weekly confirmed the cancellation, which creator Alexi Hawley addressed in a heartfelt social media post. He shared reflections on the show’s challenging production journey and its premature conclusion.

Hawley revealed that The Recruit originally “died” before season 1 at USA Network, only to be revived when executive producer Doug Liman (Mr. & Mrs. Smith) helped bring it to Netflix. The series faced production challenges, especially while filming its first season during the COVID-19 pandemic, but the creative team managed to capture “magic in the footage.” After securing a renewal for a six-episode second season, which shifted production to South Korea, Hawley felt a renewed energy—until the show’s sudden end.

“Is two seasons and a movie a thing? Because we’d all be there in a heartbeat. If not, man, we left it all on the field. For those who haven’t yet watched, dive in. I swear to God you’ll enjoy the ride,” Hawley wrote. “In an age of shows that feel like homework, The Recruit is a blast—full of stakes, humor, and hardcore action that will keep you leaning forward.”

He went on to express gratitude to his cast and crew, thanking them “for giving the best of yourselves to this special show” and adding that he is “a better person for having spent time” with them.

Season 2 of The Recruit premiered on Netflix in January, with Centineo reprising his role alongside new cast addition Teo Yoo (Past Lives). The series followed Centineo’s character, Owen Hendricks, a young CIA lawyer who becomes entangled in high-stakes international intrigue after encountering a rogue asset threatening to expose government secrets.

Despite its abrupt ending, The Recruit leaves behind a legacy of thrilling espionage and action-packed storytelling.
