NFL Rumors: Patriots Lose Out On Another Wideout Target

The New England Patriots’ quest to acquire a wide receiver hit another roadblock as they missed out on landing Denzel Mims from the New York Jets. Although the Patriots were reportedly “in the mix” for Mims, the Jets eventually traded him to the Detroit Lions. The Jets received a conditional 2025 sixth-round pick and gave up a seventh-round pick in the same year.

Mims, a second-round pick in 2020, had requested a trade last season but didn’t make a significant impact during his time with the Jets, recording just 42 receptions for 676 yards and no touchdowns. Despite his lack of production, the Jets chose to send him to the NFC North rather than to a division rival like the Patriots.

The Patriots have been keen on bolstering their offensive weapons for their young quarterback, Mac Jones, particularly after the offense’s struggles last season and with Bill O’Brien taking over as offensive coordinator. As they head into training camp, the team’s wide receiver group is led by JuJu Smith-Schuster and DeVante Parker, with Kendrick Bourne, Tyquan Thornton, Kayson Boutte, and Demario Douglas adding depth. Tre Nixon and Malik Cunningham are considered long shots to make the roster and may end up on the practice squad.
