Murder Charges Announced in Fatal Shooting of General Hospital Actor Johnny Wactor
Johnny Wactor, a 37-year-old actor best known for his role on General Hospital, was tragically shot and killed on May 25 during a suspected catalytic converter theft in downtown Los Angeles. Four men have now been charged in connection with his death, with two facing murder charges.
Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced the charges on Monday. Robert Barceleau and Sergio Estrada, both 18, have been charged with murder. Barceleau faces one count of murder with special circumstances of committing the crime during an attempted robbery, as well as personal use of a firearm. Estrada has been charged with one count of murder with an allegation of being a principal armed with a firearm. Both suspects also face additional charges of attempted robbery and grand theft while armed with a firearm.
Two other men involved in the incident face lesser charges. Leonel Gutierrez, also 18, has been charged with attempted robbery and grand theft, both with allegations of being armed with a firearm. Frank Olano, 22, is charged with accessory after the fact to murder, receiving stolen property, and three counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
If convicted, Barceleau could face life in prison without parole, while Estrada could receive a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. Olano faces a potential sentence of five years and eight months, and Gutierrez faces four years and eight months.
The fatal encounter occurred as Wactor and his co-worker, Anita Joy, were leaving the bar and restaurant where they had been bartending. They confronted three men attempting to steal the catalytic converter from Wactor’s car. According to authorities, Wactor was shot while trying to protect Joy from further harm. Joy later recounted that Wactor died in her arms.
“Johnny Wactor’s life was senselessly taken while he was simply walking to his parked car in downtown Los Angeles,” said District Attorney Gascón in a statement. “We are committed to seeking justice for Mr. Wactor and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable for their actions. The loss of this talented young actor, who was in the prime of his life and had so much to offer the world, is deeply felt by all of us. Mr. Wactor’s work and presence touched the lives of many, and our hearts go out to his family, friends, and the entire community who mourn this devastating loss.”
