MLB: Texas Rangers defeat defending champions Houston in playoffs

Jordan Montgomery, the Texas pitcher, delivered a standout performance against Houston, keeping them scoreless for over 6 innings. With this, the Rangers, the visiting team, clinched a 2-0 win over the reigning champion Astros in the MLB playoffs on Sunday. Achieving six strikeouts, Montgomery gave up only five hits and one walk. This led the Rangers to take the lead in the best-of-seven American League Championship Series, set to continue in Houston on Monday.

Jonah Heim, the Texas catcher, remarked, “Jordan’s control over his pitches was impeccable. He really came through in crucial moments.”

On Monday, Arizona will play against Philadelphia in the National League Championship Series, setting the stage for determining who will compete against the victor of the Texas-Houston series in the World Series. Despite the Astros’ impressive record, having been in the ALCS for seven consecutive times, Montgomery, a seasoned 30-year-old left-hander, overshadowed their star player, Justin Verlander. While Verlander struck out five, he conceded two runs from six hits across nearly 7 innings.

The Rangers secured their lead in the game’s second inning, thanks to Evan Carter’s double, which was followed by a run scored on Heim’s single. In the fifth inning, a home run by Leody Taveras off Verlander furthered the Rangers’ lead to 2-0.

21-year-old Carter, who only debuted in MLB the previous month, made history as the youngest player to achieve five extra-base hits in his initial six playoff games. An elated Carter expressed, “It’s exhilarating. I’m relishing every moment, ensuring I stay grounded and cohesive with the team.”

However, Houston missed a prime scoring opportunity in the eighth inning. After a walk by Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman’s fly ball was caught by Carter. Carter later remarked about the critical catch, stating that had the ball drifted a bit more to the left, it might have been a different story.

Adding to the Astros’ woes, Altuve, after advancing past second base, failed to retouch it while returning to first. This resulted in an appeal backed by video replay, and Altuve was declared out. The inning wrapped up with Yordan Alvarez grounding out.

In the game’s final inning, the Rangers’ closing pitcher, Jose Leclerc, stepped up, making short work of the core Astros hitters to seal the win.
