Mike Flanagan, the creator behind recent horror hits like The Fall of the House of Usher and Midnight Mass, has unveiled his first major project since moving from Netflix to Amazon. While fans are still waiting for his adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower, Flanagan is now working on another King classic: Carrie.

Flanagan is developing a TV series based on King’s first published novel, Carrie, which is described as “a bold and timely reimagining” of the iconic story. The official logline introduces Carrie White, a misfit high schooler who has lived in isolation with her overbearing mother. After the sudden death of her father, Carrie must navigate the unfamiliar world of public high school, a bullying scandal that rocks her community, and the emergence of her mysterious telekinetic powers.

Flanagan will serve as showrunner, writer, and executive producer for the series, which has not yet been officially greenlit. His frequent collaborator, Trevor Macy of Intrepid Pictures, is also attached as an executive producer.

Carrie has been adapted multiple times since its release, most famously in the 1976 film starring Sissy Spacek. Other adaptations include The Rage: Carrie 2 (1999), a 2002 TV movie, and a 2013 remake starring Chloë Grace Moretz. Flanagan’s version, however, promises to bring a fresh, modern twist to the well-known story.

Flanagan is no stranger to Stephen King’s works, having previously adapted Gerald’s Game, Doctor Sleep, and The Life of Chuck to critical and commercial success. His long-term passion project remains The Dark Tower, an epic King series that has faced ongoing delays. Speaking at a 2024 New York Comic Con panel for The Fall of the House of Usher, Flanagan admitted the adaptation is still in development but shared optimism, stating, “It’s taking forever, but we’re further along than ever before.”

He emphasized his approach to the Dark Tower adaptation, saying, “The only way to do it is to just do the books. Stephen King builds an incredible universe, but it starts with one person following another in the desert. That simplicity is key to telling the story.”

Flanagan and Macy, now under an overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios, will continue to create new projects for their new home. The duo had previously produced a number of successful series for Netflix, including The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and Midnight Mass. Flanagan is also attached to direct an upcoming Exorcist movie for Universal, where he hopes to create the scariest film of his career.
