Madonna Faces Pressure to ‘Downsize’ Biopic, Hints at Possible TV Series Instead: ‘We Cannot Shrink’

Madonna recently revealed in a passionate Instagram post that producers and agents have been pressuring her to “downscale” her highly anticipated biopic, initially planned as a sweeping cinematic journey through her life, starring Julia Garner.

The Queen of Pop, who has spent four decades defining the music industry, shared that she’s been “struggling” against industry figures attempting to minimize the scope of the self-directed project, which has been in the works for years. Despite collaborating on early drafts with Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody and later revising with Erin Cressida Wilson, Madonna paused the film—originally set for release via Universal—to launch her Celebration tour in 2023.

In her Instagram message, Madonna, 66, explained that those in power wanted her to “think smaller” about a film that traces her journey from her early years in New York City to her meteoric rise in the late ’80s and ’90s. “I realized that everything in my life is going to be challenged,” she wrote. “No easy rides for me. I guess I should be grateful… It forces me to think outside the box. I did not have a normal life. I cannot make this in the normal way.”

Spending time with creative collaborators and friends, Madonna found renewed inspiration and decided to “be even more fearless” in pursuing the project, emphasizing, “We cannot shrink and make ourselves smaller. If you want something badly enough in life, the whole universe will conspire to help you get it.” She ended her post with a question for fans, teasing the possibility of adapting her story as a series rather than a feature film: “Should I make the story of my life into a series or a feature film?” she asked, adding, “Think before you answer!!”

Entertainment Weekly reached out to Madonna’s representatives for further comment.

Earlier developments of the project included Julia Fox meeting with Madonna in January 2022 to discuss portraying Debi Mazar, Madonna’s long-time friend whom she met at New York City’s famed Danceteria nightclub in the ’80s. Although Fox is no longer involved in the project, the potential cast had generated much excitement among fans.

Following the end of her Celebration tour, Madonna announced in July that she would resume work on the biopic, sharing an image of a screenplay draft titled Who’s That Girl—a nod to both her 1987 film and its chart-topping soundtrack. As she contemplates whether to bring her life story to the big screen or explore it through a series, fans eagerly await her next move.
