Leeds United reject Ligue 2 bid of up to £4m for teenage prospect as transfer stance is clarified

Leeds United has declined an offer amounting to £4m for young talent Darko Gyabi, though a transfer might still materialize before Friday’s final call.

Valenciennes, a team currently ranking 16th out of 20 in the Ligue 2, expressed interest in the midfielder, but their offer was rebuffed by Leeds. It’s notable that Valenciennes has major backing from Sport Republic, which also supports Southampton, a team competing with Leeds for Championship promotion.

Sources close to YEP have shared that Leeds might still consider a season-long loan for Gyabi.

Gyabi, an emerging star in England’s youth football scene, was acquired by Leeds from Manchester City in a deal worth £5m the previous summer. He showcased his potential with the Under 21s, registering two goals and three assists as a defensive midfielder. His efforts were rewarded with a brief spell in the Premier League, where he made a short appearance in a game against Manchester City. Furthermore, Gyabi had stints in the FA Cup, EFL Cup, and three outings in the EFL Trophy.

This season, while Gyabi has been on the reserve list for manager Daniel Farke, he’s only been on the field for a brief moment in Championship play. Despite the potential opportunity in the Carabao Cup match against Salford City, Farke preferred the combination of Archie Gray and Ethan Ampadu. Such decisions hint at Gyabi’s uncertain future, especially with Leeds eyeing midfielders Ilia Gruev from Werder Bremen and Glen Kamara from Rangers.

Gyabi might follow the steps of Sam Greenwood and Leo Hjelde, seeking loan opportunities as the summer window draws to a close on Friday.
