In a delightful turn of events, Kristen Wiig has fulfilled her promise to create the perfect theme song for the new Netflix documentary Will & Harper, and it just might earn her an Oscar.

The film, which chronicles the 16-day road trip of longtime friends and Saturday Night Live alumni Will Ferrell and Harper Steele following Steele’s coming out as a trans woman, features a running gag about needing a theme song for their journey. After brainstorming various celebrity friends who could contribute, they ultimately decide to reach out to Wiig.

Ferrell and Steele present Wiig with a quirky set of instructions for the song, asking for it to be “up-tempo,” “jazzy,” and with a hint of “country twang,” while still needing to be “fun” yet capable of making listeners cry. After agreeing to the challenge, the trio parts ways, with Ferrell and Steele following up on Wiig’s progress only to find her voicemail each time.

Initially, the documentary plays it off as a lighthearted gimmick. However, during the credits, a voicemail from Wiig reveals that she indeed completed the song — titled “Harper and Will Go West,” co-written with musician Sean Douglas — which then plays over the closing credits.

Steele shared with Entertainment Weekly that she genuinely believed Wiig had ghosted them. “Yes, that’s a real conversation [in the film], and the director, Josh Greenbaum, kept us in the dark about Kristen’s process. I really thought she blew us off,” Steele admitted.

Ferrell added, “That’s the brilliance of Kristen Wiig. We jokingly threw all these ideas at her and heard nothing until Josh revealed, ‘Guess what? She finally wrote and recorded the song.’ It’s incredible. It almost made us cry again with how good it is and how she pulled it off.”

Much like the documentary itself, the song strikes a balance of humor and emotion, perfectly capturing the essence of their instructions. The opening lyrics set the tone: “Harper and Will go west / just a couple of old friends / and a couple brand new breasts / they’re off to see America not sure what they’ll find / open to the open road / only to be reminded that a friend is a friend is a friend… till the end.”

When it was suggested that both the film and Wiig’s song could be contenders for Oscars in Best Documentary and Best Original Song categories, Steele humorously remarked, “Don’t tell Kristen that; it’ll go right to her head.”

Ferrell confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that plans for Oscar submissions are already in motion. With a wink, he added, “I think there is a concerted effort to push that.”
