Defenseman, Norris Trophy finalist at NHL Awards, wants ‘opportunity to win’ – Karlsson wants to be traded from Sharks to Stanley Cup contender

Karlsson wants to be traded from Sharks to Stanley Cup contender

Erik Karlsson, a finalist for the Norris Trophy, expressed his desire to be traded to a Stanley Cup contender and hopes that the San Jose Sharks can facilitate the move before the next season.

During the 2023 NHL Awards media day, Karlsson emphasized his ambition to avoid being one of those talented players who never had the opportunity to win. While he appreciates his time in San Jose and acknowledges the mutual desire for success, he understands that if the opportunity to win is not within his timeline in San Jose, it’s an unfortunate aspect of the business.

Karlsson, who possesses a full no-movement clause in his eight-year contract with the Sharks, stated that he doesn’t have a specific team in mind as a preferred destination. He believes that simply making the playoffs provides a chance to win, citing the surprising success of teams like the Florida Panthers in reaching the Cup Final despite low expectations.

Given his age of 33 and four years remaining on his contract, Karlsson doesn’t believe he will have that chance to win with the Sharks, as they have failed to make the Stanley Cup Playoffs in each of the first four seasons of his contract, despite his impressive contributions.

Karlsson is a finalist for both the Norris Trophy and the Ted Lindsay Award, and he hopes to win the Norris Trophy for the third time. He remains committed to the goal of winning and is willing to make the necessary decisions, including potentially relocating his family, to pursue his professional aspirations.

While there is no animosity between Karlsson and the Sharks, he has had preliminary discussions with Sharks general manager Mike Grier regarding a potential move. Karlsson commended Grier’s communication and decision-making for the team, expressing his respect for the organization’s direction. Although specific details have not been discussed extensively, Karlsson recognizes that many teams are interested but not all have the capability to make a move. His priority lies in finding a favorable professional situation rather than focusing on personal gain.

Karlsson mentioned that starting the next season with the Sharks would be understandable but not ideal due to personal reasons such as selling his house and relocating his family. However, he emphasized his contentment in San Jose and the established life his family has there.

Nonetheless, Karlsson’s primary concern at this stage is winning. As a 33-year-old player with plenty to offer, he wants to prioritize the business aspect and find a team that provides him with a chance to win, even though it’s a challenging decision to make. Despite the current focus on business, Karlsson still has a deep love for the sport and remains determined to achieve success.
