Despite swirling rumors suggesting that the New York Jets might be active participants in the trade market ahead of Tuesday’s deadline, general manager Joe Douglas ultimately chose to maintain the status quo with his 4-3 roster.
“We made numerous inquiries about various positions,” Douglas stated, according to the team’s official website. “But as the saying goes, it takes two to tango. We reached out to several teams, but we didn’t finalize many deals.”
In the end, the Jets executed just one transaction leading up to the deadline, involving the little-utilized Mecole Hardman in a trade back to Kansas City on October 18 in exchange for a swap of late-round picks in 2025.
New York had identified a need along the offensive line, but the scarcity of available players made it unlikely that they could secure an upgrade at the right price.
In the days leading up to the deadline, two Jets players, running back Dalvin Cook and defensive end Carl Lawson, became subjects of trade speculations due to their limited roles. Cook suggested that a trade could be a beneficial change, while Lawson expressed a desire to play football rather than serving as a “cheerleader.”
Ultimately, both players will remain with the Jets after the trade deadline.
“Dalvin and Carl are not only tremendous teammates but also talented players,” Douglas affirmed. “We anticipate needing their contributions significantly as we approach the latter part of the season. They remain valuable assets to our team, and we are content with their presence. Seven games into the season, with a record of 4-3, there’s still a lot of football ahead of us. In the end, we made decisions that we believe are in the best interest of our team, and we are enthusiastic about the players on our roster.”
The playing time of both Cook and Lawson will likely hinge on the health of the players ahead of them in the team’s depth chart. Breece Hall has proven to be considerably more effective than Cook as a running back. On the defensive side, players like Bryce Huff and Jermaine Johnson have shown promise, suggesting that their roles may expand rather than diminish to accommodate a player like Lawson.

The Jets are currently positioned on the periphery of a playoff spot (No. 8 in the AFC), making the depth they maintain on their roster a valuable asset as the season unfolds.
