Harry Potter TV Show Announces Open Casting Call for New Harry, Ron, and Hermione
Excitement is brewing in the U.K. and Ireland as HBO launches an open casting call for the iconic roles of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger in its upcoming adaptation of the beloved series.
Children aged 9 to 11 from the U.K. and Ireland are invited to apply. Applicants are required to submit two short self-tapes: one featuring a poem or short story of their choice, but notably excluding any text from the Harry Potter books. The casting call specifies that candidates should use their own accent and avoid material from the franchise.
The call encourages applicants to share information about any close family members, friends, or pets, and emphasizes a commitment to “inclusive, diverse casting” without discrimination based on ethnicity, sex, disability, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, or other protected characteristics.
Submissions are due by October 31, 2024, with filming scheduled to take place between 2025 and 2026 in the U.K.
While HBO has not responded to Entertainment Weekly’s request for comment, the casting call has been confirmed as authentic by Variety. The series will be helmed by Francesca Gardiner (known for Succession, His Dark Materials, and Killing Eve) as showrunner, writer, and executive producer, with J.K. Rowling also serving as an executive producer. Rowling’s involvement has been controversial due to her past comments on transgender issues.
HBO has chosen not to address the controversy surrounding Rowling, with CEO Casey Bloys stating last year, “That’s a very online conversation, very nuanced and complicated and not something we’re going to get into. Our priority is what’s on the screen. Obviously, the Harry Potter story is incredibly affirmative…”
