Ford’s Latest Recall For Defective Cameras Brings Repair Costs To $270M

Around 170,000 Ford and Lincoln vehicles are affected by a new recall.

Ford has announced a significant recall that will be expensive to address. The recall pertains to specific Lincoln Aviator, Ford Bronco, Lincoln Navigator, and Ford Transit models due to issues with the rearview camera, a recurring problem for the company. In total, 169,277 vehicles are impacted, with the repair costs projected to reach $270 million based on a report to the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

These vehicles might lose the rearview camera feed while reversing, displaying a blue or black screen, which could potentially result in an accident. The vehicles in question include 2020-2023 Lincoln Aviator crossovers, 2018-2021 Lincoln Navigator SUVs, 2022-2023 Ford Transit vans, and 2021 Ford Bronco SUVs.

The root of the problem varies with the camera system each vehicle uses. Some suffer from fretting corrosion on the camera connector inside, affecting the image quality. Certain systems might also have manufacturing defects causing connector misalignment. For models like the Transit, the primary issue lies in the image processing module.

Earlier in January 2023, Ford recalled 382,000 vehicles for similar camera concerns. This included the Aviator, Ford Explorer, and Lincoln Corsair, which Ford listed in its September 1 SEC filing, contributing to the estimated $270 million expense.

Data from the US Department of Transportation’s DataHub indicates that Ford tops the list in recall numbers this year. They’ve initiated 42 recalls affecting 4.6 million vehicles. Chrysler follows with 33 recalls impacting 2.1 million units. Ford concluded 2022 with the highest recall count, mirroring their record from 2021, where they launched 65 recall campaigns for over 8.6 million vehicles.

Throughout this year, Ford has recalled various models, including the Bronco, F-150, Escape, and Expedition. In July, close to 900,000 F-150s were recalled due to potential unexpected activation of electric parking brakes. In June, the recall affected 125,000 units of Escapes, Mavericks, and Lincoln Corsairs because of an enhanced fire risk linked to potential engine failures.

Ford’s recall challenges extend to older vehicles, like the Lincoln MKC, recalled for potential under-hood fires. They’ve also instructed dealers to correct airbag installations in specific 2004-2006 Ford Ranger pickups.

Owners with affected vehicles will be advised to visit a Ford or Lincoln service center for a complimentary fix. The firm will replace problematic rearview camera systems and update the software of the image processing module. Notifications to affected owners will commence on October 2.
