Dwayne Johnson Dismisses ‘Red One’ Lateness Rumors as ‘Ridiculous’
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is setting the record straight on recent claims about his tardiness during the filming of Red One.
In April, a report by The Wrap alleged that Johnson was frequently late to set, sometimes by as much as seven or eight hours, and even missed several filming days, which reportedly led to increased production costs for the Christmas film.
Johnson, however, has refuted these claims, calling them “bulls—” in a recent GQ cover story. While he admits that he may occasionally arrive late, he disputes the exaggerated claims of hours-long delays or missed days. Addressing the controversy, Johnson said, “Yeah, that happens too… but not that amount, by the way. That was a bananas amount. That’s crazy. Ridiculous.”
In the same interview, Johnson also confirmed a less conventional practice he follows on set—using water bottles to relieve himself during long shoots to save time. “Yeah, that happens,” he said with a laugh.
Red One director Jake Kasdan and costar Chris Evans also came to Johnson’s defense in the GQ piece. Kasdan emphasized Johnson’s professionalism, saying, “He’s never missed a day of work ever. He has a lot going on. He can be late sometimes, but such is Hollywood—that’s the case with everybody. Honestly, I’ve made three big movies with him, and I’ve never seen him be anything but great to every single person on the set.”
Evans echoed Kasdan’s sentiment, noting that Johnson’s morning workouts—which were mentioned as a cause of his lateness in The Wrap report—were well-planned within the production schedule. “The producers, the director, his team—all of them know this,” Evans explained. “It’s not like he’s late unexpectedly. I wouldn’t even call it late; it’s part of the plan. Everyone knows it, and he shows up when he’s scheduled to show up.”

While Johnson acknowledges occasional delays and his unconventional habit of using water bottles, he stressed his openness about his work ethic, saying, “I’ve said a thousand times: ‘Hey, I’m here. Come and ask me. And I’ll tell you the truth.’” He attributes much of his success to his commitment to honesty and authenticity.
Red One, where Johnson stars as Santa Claus’s bodyguard, is set to premiere on November 15.
