Brendan Fraser’s son “Who Lives With Obesity” inspired his performance in “The Whale.”

According to Brendan Fraser, playing a father with an obese child in “The Whale” was very important to his character because it helped him learn about the severity of the illness.
Brendan Fraser is sharing how his eldest son, Griffin, who has autism and is obese inspires him to play a character like himself with his latest film.
The actor, who stars in the upcoming psychological drama and is an overweight father himself, is excited to portray his character closely.
In the new reality TV show, “Growing Up Hip Hop Atlanta,” which chronicles the lives of black millennials across the country, Griffin — who is six feet tall and weighs 375 pounds — shares his struggles with obesity.
Stephen Griffin claims that he’s never met someone in his life that is as happy as his son. He also says that because his son has autism, he doesn’t know what ‘cynicism’ is.
“You can’t insult him,” he says.
The film, “The Whale”, releases on December 9th. Fraser did extensive physical transformation to play his character, a 600-pound man who is confined to a wheelchair and must wear a 300-pound suit every day on set. As an actor, he said this was the most challenging role of his life. But Fraser said it was important to bring what was important to him as an actor in the role — whatever that seemed like — into the movie because he has 17-year-old daughter [Sadie Sink].
Fraser is married to wife Afton. He shares sons Holand, 18, and Leland, 16 with her and they were divorced in 2007 after nine years of marriage.

Brendan Fraser likes to play the hero, so it wasn’t difficult for him to agree to play a severely obese man in “The Whale.” Even though he had to perform nearly two hours of strenuous physical exercise every day and undergo a drastic weight loss regimen, he says this role is the toughest he’s ever tackled.
The Darren Aronofsky film, which is showing at the Toronto Film Festival in September, features Fraser’s character Charlie as a reclusive teacher who is deteriorating rapidly.
“I was able to understand the very specific nature of someone like that,” he said while talking with The Guardian. “It taught me a lot about what it takes on a daily basis to be in those shoes, so I’m very respectful of it and that’s one of the reasons why I don’t feel like a true villain because it made me appreciate those who are in similar shoes.”
Charlie’s story was told through conversations between Charlie, a fictional character in the film, and his mother. He carries the trauma he has experienced throughout his life with him on his actual weight-not just metaphorically. I think it’s telling that this trauma is manifested in the character of Charlie.
“I needed to learn to absolutely move in a new way,” says Nicky. “I developed muscles I did not know I had.” He even felt a sense of vertigo at the end of the day when all the appliances were removed, as you would feel stepping off a boat on to the dock here in Venice. Fraser, who played two characters in the film, felt this was one of the toughest roles he’d ever taken on.
“My journey to where I am now has been to explore as many characters as I can,” Fraser said. “This presented the biggest challenge to me.”
“I think Charlie is by far the most heroic man I’ve ever played,” Fraser said. “His superpower is to see the good in others, and to let that goodness flow through him. In this process, he’s on his journey of salvation.”
