Agatha All Along Creator Discusses Mephisto Name-Drop: “We’re Always Playing with the Audience”
Was the mention of Mephisto an inside joke or a hint at the arrival of a formidable Marvel villain? According to creator Jac Schaeffer, it could be both.
Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers from Agatha All Along episode 3, “Through Many Miles of Tricks and Trials.”
As fans speculate about potential surprises in Agatha All Along, two prominent characters emerge as candidates for unexpected appearances: Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) or Mephisto, a powerful demon tied to Agatha Harkness in Marvel comics. While it’s still unclear whether either will make an appearance, episode 3 provides a more explicit nod toward Mephisto.
The episode opens with the first trial on the Witches’ Road, where Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) and her coven find themselves in a chic oceanside house, magically adorned in stylish East Coast fashion—think high pin-striped collars and pearls. During this scene, potions expert Jennifer Kale (Sasheer Zamata) shares a moment with the enigmatic Teen (Joe Locke), who is unable to reveal his identity due to a sigil placed on him by an unknown entity. This scenario invites viewers to ponder his true identity alongside Jennifer.
One intriguing possibility she proposes is that the Teen could be “an agent of Mephisto.” In a prior interview with Entertainment Weekly before the show’s Disney+ premiere, showrunner Jac Schaeffer addressed this particular mention in episode 3, which certainly piques the interest of comic fans.
“With these shows, there’s often something that serves as both a joke and a hint, while also holding some legitimacy beneath the surface,” Schaeffer explained. “Mephisto is a character deeply woven into Agatha’s story. We’re always engaging with the audience in that manner.”
The speculation surrounding Mephisto gained momentum during the original airing of WandaVision, where fans believed he played a role—though that turned out to be incorrect. Inspired by the demon Mephistopheles, Mephisto reigns over a hellish dimension, seeking to claim the souls of the living. He often takes on a likeness similar to biblical Satan and delights in making mischievous bargains to achieve his goals.
Another theory circulating among fans is that Aubrey Plaza’s character, Rio Vidal, referred to as the “green witch” with ties to Agatha, could actually represent Blackheart, Mephisto’s offspring from the comics. In the first episode, Rio declares that her “black heart beats for Agatha,” while Patti LuPone’s character, Lilia Calderu, draws a black heart when she predicts another witch joining their coven. Some fans even speculate that Rio might be Mephisto in disguise.
“I can’t reveal everything about my character yet, but there are layers to her,” Plaza teased to EW. “I wanted to infuse a chaotic energy and spontaneity to keep Agatha on her toes, making the dynamic fun.”
Regarding the possibility of Olsen’s appearance in Agatha All Along, Schaeffer discussed her desire to incorporate Wanda’s legacy into the series.
“There was a lot of thought put into it,” she noted. “That’s a great way to express it: her shadow. Agatha is not a character who will stand in anyone’s shadow, so this is definitively Agatha Harkness’ show. However, since we’re within the WandaVision universe, Wanda’s legacy does leave its mark on the narrative. But the focus is on Agatha—her journey and the truth about her character.”
