A talented wide receiver drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in 2018 is making a comeback to the NFL. As teams gear up for training camp, they are finalizing their camp rosters and making late-offseason signings. Among the free agents still seeking teams like DeAndre Hopkins and Dalvin Cook, there are lesser-known players hoping for a training camp invitation to compete for a roster spot.

One such player is Deon Cain, the wide receiver selected by the Colts in the sixth round of the 2018 Draft. After stints with different teams, Cain had an impressive run in the USFL and now gets another shot in the NFL. His USFL team, the Birmingham Stallions, announced on Monday that they were terminating Cain’s contract because he was signing with an NFL team. However, the specific NFL franchise has not been disclosed yet.

During the most recent USFL season, Deon Cain played eight regular-season games with the Stallions. He recorded 16 receptions for 182 yards and two touchdowns. Additionally, he displayed his versatility with 668 kick return yards and two kick return touchdowns. In the two-game playoffs, Cain had 12 catches for 144 yards and an impressive three touchdowns, earning him the MVP title in the championship game.

Before joining the USFL, Cain spent five years in the NFL, facing challenges after an ACL tear in his first preseason game. He had brief stints on the active roster with the Colts and Pittsburgh Steelers, while also being a practice squad member for the Baltimore Ravens and Philadelphia Eagles. Overall, he played in 15 NFL games, catching nine passes for 124 yards.

With his standout performances in the USFL, Cain now returns to the NFL with hopes of finding success. The USFL’s return in 2022 has already seen several success stories of players transitioning to the NFL, such as KaVontae Turpin, who went from being the USFL MVP to becoming a Pro Bowl returner with the Dallas Cowboys. Deon Cain is aiming for similar accomplishments in his NFL comeback.
