UNDER NEW TRANSFER PORTAL RULES NCAA D-I ATHLETES HAVE SMALLER WINDOW TO CHANGE SCHOOLS

On October 4, the NCAA Division 1 Council decided to shorten the duration students have to enter the transfer portal from 60 days to 45 days. This decision was influenced by the feedback from the D1 Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and statistics showing that 60% of students indicate their transfer intentions within the first 30 days.

Cody Shrimp, the Division 1 SAAC chair, commented, “The 45-day window strikes a balance, allowing student-athletes to make informed decisions regarding their academic and athletic paths.”

Post the FBS conference championship games, Football Bowl Subdivision and Football Championship Subdivision teams can initiate transfers. If a student-athlete participates in the postseason, they must wait an additional five days.

Basketball players have a 45-day transfer window after Selection Sunday, the day determining which teams qualify for the March Madness Tournament.

For other winter and spring sports, the guidelines resemble those of football. Fall sports athletes have 30 days, starting a week post their school’s championship decision, plus a 15-day eligibility in spring, from May 1-15. Winter sports participants have 45 days post-championship decisions, and in spring, there’s a 30-day window that begins seven days post-championship, with a 15-day transfer eligibility in the fall, from Dec 1-15.

Lydia Tealer, the council’s chair and the deputy athletics director at the University of Florida, remarked, “The 45-day window, ending by May 1, offers clarity to basketball coaches about their teams, offers stability to players staying at the institution, and motivates those transferring to do so before academic obligations.”

Furthermore, the council decided that FBS institutions won’t have mandatory attendance. Additionally, the transfer fee for student-athletes moving from an FCS to an FBS school has surged from $5,000 to $5 million. These modifications are effective immediately. By August 2027, FBS schools will need to distribute 90% of scholarships over two years, including football, and guarantee funding for 210 scholarships yearly, totaling no less than $6 million annually.
