Which NCAA Hockey Teams Should Rangers Fans Cheer for?

A Rangers Fan’s Guide to NCAA Hockey Standouts

Greetings, fellow Rangers aficionados! Hockey season is upon us, with both the NCAA and NHL kicking off this week.

Diving into the NCAA hockey landscape, things at the pinnacle of the standings seem as chaotic as FDR’s rush-hour traffic!

Future Rangers in the Making: NCAA Teams and Stars on the Radar Boston University Terriers may have parted ways with a few talents, including Drew Commesso and Domenick Fensore. However, the spotlight is now on Lane Hutson, a Hobey Baker contender and a hopeful for the Montréal Canadiens. His freshman stats? An impressive 48 points.

Then there’s Macklin Celebrini, tipped to be the 2024 NHL draft’s top pick. If his performance echoes Jack Eichel’s college heroics, we’re in for a thrilling journey. Recalling Eichel’s feats, he propelled BU to the 2014-15 national title game, accumulating 71 points from 26 goals in 40 matches.

Adding Celebrini’s prowess to last year’s Frozen Four squad means formidable gameplay. Though he might miss the initial games due to a shoulder issue, he’s been seen practicing. Fingers crossed for his debut against Bentley this Saturday.

Defending the team’s goal will be Mathieu Caron, a fresh addition from Brown. Last year, the goalie clocked a .921 save rate over 24 games.

However, let’s not forget BU’s rivals at Boston College. Their rookie lineup boasts talents like Will Smith (eyed by San Jose Sharks), Ryan Leonard (Washington Capitals’ focus), and our very own prospect, Gabriel Perreault. These rookies secured the 5th, 8th, and 23rd spots in the 2023 draft, respectively.

Behind Perreault stands his fellow Eagle and defenseman, Drew Fortescue, who we picked 90th overall in the 2023 draft.

Over in the Big Ten, our 104th pick from 2021, Brody Lamb, is poised for a breakout year. Minnesota hailed as the Big Ten Conference champs last season but fell short in the 2023 NCAA Frozen Four against the titans, Quinnipiac.

In the ECAC, Hank Kempf, our 208th overall pick from 2021, is all set for a stellar junior season. He’s not known for scoring sprees but holds the fort as a reliable defenseman.

Further north in Harvard, Zakary Karpa, our 191st pick from 2022, stands tall. Even with some injuries last season, he left his mark. While the Rangers might woo him soon, another year in Harvard could enhance his gameplay.

Down at Merrimack, Hugo Ollas, our 197th pick from 2020, is the man between the posts. Last year, Merrimack showcased a 23-14-1 record, with Ollas being instrumental.

Providence awaits big things from Jaroslav Chmelar, our 5th-round pick from 2021. And in Colorado, Noah Laba is another star, bagging the 111th spot in our 2022 draft.

Lastly, we have Victor Mancini in Nebraska, ready to dazzle in his junior year as a much-needed right-shot defenseman.

Additionally, the NCAA has adjusted a few rules regarding post-goal reviews.

So, Rangers family, it’s time to immerse ourselves in NCAA
