Spain FA president Luis Rubiales resigns three weeks after Women’s World Cup controversy

Following the controversial incident where Luis Rubiales forcibly kissed Jennifer Hermoso at a trophy ceremony, he has stepped down as the president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation and as a vice president of UEFA. This move came three weeks after Spain celebrated their inaugural Women’s World Cup win.

Piers Morgan, a British media figure, was the first to break the news through a video snippet of an interview with Rubiales. In the clip, Rubiales confirmed his decision, mentioning the significant weight of the upcoming decision on Spain’s bid to co-host the 2030 World Cup with Portugal, Morocco, and Ukraine. He expressed concerns that his actions might jeopardize the bid.

While Rubiales emphasized his departure’s importance for maintaining stability and Spain’s dream of hosting the World Cup’s 100th anniversary, it’s a stark contrast to his earlier assertion post the Women’s World Cup final that he wouldn’t resign. This previous stance intensified criticisms against him, leading to strikes by the national team and other Spanish women players. FIFA had also handed Rubiales a 90-day suspension.

Prior to the World Cup, several Spanish players, including Golden Boot recipient Aitana Bonmati, had voiced concerns about insufficient funding and an unfavorable culture within the Spanish soccer community. Rubiales’ failure to apologize for the recent incident and his ongoing defiance in light of potential FIFA and criminal investigations in Spain have drawn even more scrutiny.

With Rubiales now out of the picture, Pedro Rocha, who had been interim president following Rubiales’ FIFA suspension, is set to lead the federation. This leadership change occurred shortly after Rocha dismissed Jorge Vilda, the World Cup-winning team’s head coach. Vilda, a known ally of Rubiales, had also faced criticisms, particularly from players. Montse Tome, previously an assistant to Vilda who had resigned earlier, will now take on the coaching responsibilities.

It remains uncertain whether the national players will return to play in the aftermath of Rubiales’ departure. Spain is scheduled to play UEFA Nations League matches against Sweden and Switzerland later this month.
