Ace of Ashes: Motörhead icon Lemmy has more ashes scattered at Wacken Open Air Festival

The ashes of Motörhead’s iconic frontman, Lemmy, have been scattered at the Wacken Open Air Festival in Germany as part of the ‘Lemmy Forever’ memorial weekend. Lemmy, who passed away on December 28, 2015, just two days after his cancer diagnosis, has had his ashes spread across the festival grounds where the legendary ‘Ace of Spades’ rockers performed numerous times, ensuring his spirit remains a part of the event.

Thomas Jensen, co-organizer of the festival, expressed his enormous honor at welcoming Lemmy back to Wacken. He announced plans to create a place of remembrance for the late musician that appropriately pays homage to his significant contributions to the genre and beyond. Jensen emphasized the special connection between Motörhead and Wacken Open Air, noting that few bands have performed at the festival as frequently.

Motörhead’s manager, Todd Singerman, celebrated the fact that Wacken, one of Lemmy’s favorite places, will forever be his home. He highlighted Lemmy’s image as a “man of the people,” living in numerous places globally. The aim is to allow Lemmy’s ashes to rest in all his ‘homes,’ enabling his fans around the world to pay respects and celebrate his enduring influence and legacy.

Lemmy’s bandmates, Phil Campbell and Mikkey Dee, led a series of tributes to the former Hawkwind member. Earlier, some of Lemmy’s ashes were used to create tattoos for Motörhead’s tour manager and production assistant. It was Lemmy’s pre-death request that his remains be placed inside bullets and distributed to his closest friends. In 2021, crew members Eddie Rocha and Emma Cederblad shared a video of them receiving the bullets and getting tattoos as a tribute to their late friend.

Riki Rachtman, former host of MTV’s ‘Headbangers Ball,’ was among the first to share the golden bullet he received engraved with Lemmy’s name last year. He expressed his emotional reaction in a Twitter post, thanking Motörhead.
