3 questions facing Minnesota Wild

Key questions for the Minnesota Wild this season, including a potential Dumba replacement and Rossi’s readiness.

NHL.com dives deep into each of its 32 teams from Aug. 1 – Sept. 1. Today, the spotlight is on the Minnesota Wild.

Wild Season Overview: Season preview | Top prospects | Fantasy projections

1. Who’s Stepping in for Matt Dumba?

After dedicating a decade to the Wild, 29-year-old Matt Dumba is moving on. The seasoned defenseman, boasting 236 points in 598 NHL games, wrapped up his five-year stint with the Wild this July. He’s now signed a fresh contract with the Arizona Coyotes.

Brock Faber seems poised to take up Dumba’s mantle. Fresh from the University of Minnesota and having displayed impressive performance in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Faber appears ready for the big league. His focus? “Preparing for an 82-game onslaught against the world’s best,” he remarked.

2. Is It Rossi’s Time?

Marco Rossi, the Wild’s 9th pick in the 2020 NHL Draft, came into his second NHL training camp with eyes set on the main roster. However, his previous season showcased only a glimpse of his potential. The 21-year-old forward needs to translate his commendable AHL performance to the NHL stage.

Reflecting on Rossi’s journey, Wild’s GM Bill Guerin noted, “While he kicked off with promise, he wasn’t quite there yet. Rushing him might’ve stunted his growth. The AHL was the right place for him.”

3. Who’ll Guard the Goal?

Minnesota’s primary goalie has been up for debate in recent times. Last season, the responsibility toggled between Marc-Andre Fleury and Filip Gustavsson. While Gustavsson inked a three-year deal with the Wild this July, Fleury has a year left on his contract.

Guerin is optimistic about Gustavsson’s potential. “He’s likely ready for a larger role and more games,” he stated, suggesting a potential shift in the Wild’s goalie strategy for the upcoming season.
