Whoopi Goldberg Calls Out ‘Really Dumb Question’ on The View

Whoopi Goldberg is not holding back after encountering a question she found less than impressive while hosting The View. During Monday’s episode, she introduced a Hot Topic about beauty standards, focusing on her Ghost co-star Demi Moore and actress Kate Winslet’s comments on women “aging gracefully.”

“I’m supposed to ask this really dumb question: Is this the new aging gracefully?” Goldberg said, her expression reflecting mild confusion.

Panelist Ana Navarro quickly shifted the spotlight to two women in the audience who were over 80, suggesting, “Someone should go ask those two ladies,” prompting applause from the crowd.

Goldberg elaborated on her viewpoint, stating that while “apparently this is a big deal,” she believes aging gracefully is a personal choice everyone must make for themselves. “We don’t have a choice. You either feel good about yourself or rely on someone else to tell you what you are. I always thought it was crucial to feel attractive to yourself,” she emphasized. Navarro praised Goldberg for consistently discussing her experiences with menopause throughout her career.

Goldberg remarked, “Nobody wanted to hear about it; no one wanted to know what happens after a certain age. I kept talking about it anyway because it was absurd. For years, women have been told they aren’t functional or sexually active as they age. It’s frustrating when people tell me how I should feel, especially those who haven’t reached that age themselves.”

Sara Haines added her concerns about the rise of “dangerous procedures” among women in their twenties, highlighting the need for increased self-esteem among women.

Goldberg concluded, “You can’t control everything. Life is unpredictable. You should impress yourself just as much as you try to impress others. Investing in yourself is key.”

The discussion also touched on Moore’s new film, The Substance, which critiques age anxiety in Hollywood. Moore portrays a veteran actress who turns to a black-market drug to create a younger version of herself, leading to dangerous consequences.

“I understand the sentiment of a ‘comeback’ because there hasn’t been a project that has allowed me to dive in this deeply,” Moore told Entertainment Weekly about the role. “I went through a period of questioning whether this was still what I should be doing. But in the last four years, I wanted to explore this personally and see if this is where I should focus my energy.”

The View airs weekdays at 11 a.m. ET/PT on ABC.
