Where Did Iron Maiden’s Mascot Eddie Come From

Meet Eddie, the iconic and long-running mascot of the legendary British heavy metal band, Iron Maiden.

Eddie, also known as Eddie the Head in a more formal context, has become an integral part of Iron Maiden’s identity, making him one of the most iconic symbols in the metal world. He has graced countless album and single artworks, appeared on stage as backdrops and props, adorned T-shirts, and featured in video games and a wide range of merchandise.

The name “Eddie the Head” originates from a playful British joke about a baby born with just a head, and a doctor’s promise to provide a body when he turns five. Famously known as Eddie the ‘Ead in a London accent, this nickname stuck and became synonymous with the mascot.

Eddie’s debut with Iron Maiden was rather simple, initially as a light theatrical element accompanying live performances of their song “Iron Maiden.” It started with a Kabuki-type mask used during early performances by the band, especially when Dennis Wilcock was a member before Paul Di’Anno joined.

The transformation of Eddie from a shadow-faced figure to a fully designed character came with the visual artist Derek Riggs. He portrayed Eddie as a punk-edged rocker on the band’s 1980 self-titled debut album cover. Over time, various artists and animators like Melvyn Grant, Mark Wilkinson, Hugh Syme, Tom Adams, Bob Cesca, Dave Patchett, and Tim Bradstreet have contributed to Eddie’s evolving and ever-changing appearance.

Eddie’s image has not only adorned album covers and merchandise but has also become an integral part of Iron Maiden’s live shows, adding a theatrical and visually captivating element to their performances. He is undoubtedly an iconic figure in the realm of heavy metal and a cherished symbol for Iron Maiden and their dedicated fans worldwide.
