The West Wing Cast Reunites at the White House for 25th Anniversary; Aaron Sorkin Contemplates Revival
“I just got a couple of ideas for episodes just walking around the White House,” Sorkin shared.
Welcome back to the Bartlet administration!
The cast and crew of The West Wing gathered at the White House to celebrate the show’s 25th anniversary, with First Lady Jill Biden honoring the acclaimed Emmy-winning political drama.
“We just came from the Oval,” Dr. Biden remarked. “Even though Joe [Biden] is away hosting leaders from Australia, India, and Japan in Delaware, he wanted to ensure that President Bartlet and his team had the chance to see the Oval Office again.”
Attendees included Martin Sheen, who portrayed President Josiah Bartlet and delivered a passionate speech following Dr. Biden’s address, alongside Richard Schiff (Toby Ziegler), Dulé Hill (Charlie Young), Janel Moloney (Donna Moss), Alyssa Fitzgerald (Carol Fitzpatrick), Mary McCormack (Kate Harper), Emily Procter (Ainsley Hayes), executive producer Tommy Schlamme, and series creator Aaron Sorkin.
In his speech, Sorkin praised President Biden’s recent decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race. “Over the years, I’ve noticed that during times of peak political tension, pundits warn us not to expect a West Wing moment,” he said, referencing a time when selflessness and statesmanship seem absent. “But the fact is, West Wing moments do happen. And Dr. Biden, we saw proof of that on the morning of July 21.”
Reflecting on the show’s intentions at its inception, Sorkin stated, “We had no political agenda. We were just trying to create a good show every week. The greatest delivery system for an idea is a story, and occasionally, we hear from someone inspired to enter public service because of our show. That’s something none of us could have foreseen 25 years ago.”
After the event, Sorkin revealed he’s considering a revival of the series. “If I had an idea, sure,” he told Variety. “I didn’t take it seriously until today… We’ll see what happens when I wake up tomorrow. But as of now, this is how I feel.”
He admitted to feeling inspired during the reunion, sharing, “I got a couple of ideas for episodes just walking around the White House. Like, ‘Why didn’t we ever do this? Why didn’t we ever do that?'”
However, Sorkin expressed concern about creating new episodes that might feel too closely tied to contemporary politics. “My worry would be that everything we did on the show would be seen as a rebuttal to the world of Donald Trump.”
Additionally, Sorkin mentioned his hesitation about a revival due to the audience’s attachment to Martin Sheen’s portrayal of President Bartlet. “I suspect a new president would struggle to live up to people’s memories of Martin,” he noted. “But maybe enough time has passed, and there’s a whole new generation that thinks we’re making the show today, thanks to streaming!”
